Puget Sound Energy (PSE) is the largest utility provider in Washington state, serving more than 1.5 million electric and natural gas customers throughout the Puget Sound region. As a legacy Pacific Northwest brand, PSE is responsible for communicating clearly, consistently, and accessibly with a broad range of audiences—from homeowners and business owners to policymakers and community partners. Their work centers on safety, reliability, sustainability, and strong customer support, reinforced through energy-efficiency programs, rebate incentives, and community-focused outreach.
The Challenge
PSE initially brought us in to help manage the overflow of daily design needs that their internal team didn’t have the capacity to handle. Their volume of communication—spanning print materials, digital assets, customer education, rebate documentation, and ongoing program support—is constant, fast-moving, and high-visibility.
After a round of internal layoffs, the need for external support grew significantly. With only one internal designer remaining—functioning more as a creative director—PSE required a partner who could work autonomously, handle high-volume production, and stay fully aligned with strict brand standards. Tight deadlines, heavy output, and flawless execution quickly became the expectation.
Because of our deep familiarity with PSE’s visual system, we were trusted to take on the majority of design work independently, looping in the internal brand team only when exploring exceptions or refreshing components of the system. Reliability, consistency, and speed became the foundation of the relationship.

Our workflow with Puget Sound Energy is fully integrated into their internal operations. We work directly inside their project management system (Smartsheet), where the brand manager assigns projects to us as if we were members of their in-house team.
